VISTA RECRUITMENT RESOURCES
Effective
recruitment will make finding a VISTA easier. Below are tips
for good places to try recruiting. You might also find it
useful to look at, or copy some of the sample promotional
material. Make sure you personalize it to highlight your
recruiting requirements. If you are recruiting for a ReStore VISTA
add some ReStore specific facts. If you want
more tips or advice on effective recruitment practices email Brenna at
brenna@hfhmn.org and we can work together.
Don’t forget, applicants can access a downloadable copy of
the paper application, a link to the electronic application and
downloadable reference form under the “Become an Americorps /
VISTA” link under the Get Involved drop down menu.

Remember to use this official AmeriCorps VISTA logo when recruting for
a new VISTA (simply click, drag, and drop this logo on your computer's
desktop or recruiting materials).
Potential Places to Recruit
-
When starting to recruit, use
your volunteer base to help spread the word.
- Often churches will print up
an announcement in their weekly bulletin for free.
- If you work with local high
school or college chapters, remember to network with their
members. It’s a good idea to host an information
table in a busy part of campus in the middle of a week.
- The local workforce center is
a good employment agency to contact.
- Always have a VISTA table of
information at any Habitat event, even if it is in the beginning of the
year. It’s important to network all year. If you are in need of more recruitment materials let the Corporation
office know and they can send you additional materials.
- Have you tried local volunteer
organizations? Do you have business clubs that might
advertise for you, such as the Rotary Club? Don’t
always look for the “typical VISTA,” the new
college graduate; also look at other demographics in your local
community.

- Sample Media Announcement
- A media announcement should be used
after an affiliate has filled a VISTA position. It will get
both the VISTA program and the affiliate’s name out into the
public, creating more awareness about both the program and the
affiliate.
- Sample Newspaper Ad
- If the affiliate advertises in the
local newspaper make sure to be concise, but also
include the key information about the position. Keep in mind
that newspapers usually charge per line. If the affiliate gets to
design the ad, make sure to use an easy to read font since the text will
be reduced to an eight point size. See this sample text for a
newspaper ad.
- Sample Website Posting
- Remember the most important part about
a website posting is to entice the reader by grabbing their
attention. Highlight an interesting aspect of their work-plan
or a surprising fact about the affiliate to get their attention. Here is a sample website posting.
- Sample Promotional VISTA Flyer
- When
recruiting for a VISTA, it is important to publicize the position
throughout the community. It is often useful to place one-page flyers
in local business windows. This is a sample flyer you can modify and use.
