Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota
Homeowner Impact Pilot Study
In September 2011, Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota
conducted a Homeowner Impact Pilot Study
to collect data on how partner families’
lives have changed after becoming Habitat
homeowners. The pilot study looked specifically
at changes in health and safety, education,
community, family and personal wellbeing,
and financial wellbeing. Seven Greater
Minnesota Habitat affiliates participated
in the study, and HFH-MN hopes to conduct
a statewide survey in the future.
Here are a few of our findings:
- Over 80% of respondents said they felt safer and felt
their children were safer
- 88% of respondents said they feel better about their
children’s future
- 73% of homeowners said they felt more connected to
the community
- 51% said they changed jobs, and of those 51%, 82% said
their new job was better
- 298 government assistance programs were being used
before Habitat and only 182 programs
are being used currently, which is
a 40% reduction
- 92% of homeowners said their lives were better, and
of those 92%,
- 95% said Habitat contributed a lot or completely to
the changes in their families’ lives
Minnesota affiliates should feel free to use these
findings. It should be noted, however,
that the data was collected using a non-random
sample, so it is not necessarily representative
of the entire state. We ask if you use
this information, you cite the Habitat
for Humanity of Minnesota’s Homeowner
Impact Pilot Study. Thank you!
